Introduction
What are the different types of sea angling ?
Sea fishing could be recreational or sport fishing.
To practise sport fishing, you must be a member of a national sports organisation or have a national sports licence.
You must not sell your catch. It is intended solely for your own consumption and that of your family.
Recreational sea fishing also includes fishing in which fish are released immediately after capture (no-kill fishing).
You can go fishing :
- On foot
- From boats or ships
- Swimming or diving
Why should you be a FMPS and APMM member ?
Maritime regulations in the Principality of Monaco do not require the possession of a licence for recreational and/or sport fishing. However, there are complex regulations governing this activity.
Only underwater hunting is subject to declaration to the Maritime and Airport Police Division located at Quai Antoine 1er.
The Fédération Monégasque de Pêches Sportives (Monegasque Sport Fishing Federation) is the only point of contact for the Prince's Government on the supervision of this activity and is recognised for its expertise and vision. As an approved not-for-profit organisation (NPO), its mission is to use its capital to benefit actions in line with its object, and more particularly in the areas of education, protection and competition.
As proof of our seriousness, and as an NPO receiving public subsidies, an accounting control is carried out every 6 months by the Department of the Interior by delegation to the Controller General of Expenditure of the National Sports Commission.
Your membership enables us first and foremost to defend our right to fish, while quantifying and characterising the harmful impact of our activity on the environment, so that we can modify our practices and behaviour to reduce this impact, or even eliminate it, by raising awareness and changing the regulations.
This contribution does not stop there, as your investment also helps to finance part of the Participatory Science programmes run by the FMPS in collaboration with the APMM.
Practical example
The Solarium area is subject to time restrictions during the summer months. Recreational and sport fishing is prohibited in this area, which is marked by yellow cylindrical buoys, from 1 May to 31 October, except from 9pm to 6am. This action was taken by the FMPS in 2021 to minimise conflicts of use and was approved by the Conseil de la Mer following a proposal from the Direction des Affaires Maritimes. For the rest of the year, the practice of this activity is not subject to time regulations on this site.
Benefit from tools and easier access to regulatory knowledge
The complexity of our country's territory needs for the creation of information tools that can be used by as many people as possible. With this in mind, the FMPS has developed a regularly updated interactive map of the areas authorised for this activity (link): INTERACTIVE MAP
Please take into account that all the country's ports and port entrances are closed to our activity.
Learn more about species identification, protected species, minimum catch sizes, etc....
One of the roles of the FMPS is to disseminate current regulations as widely as possible so that as many people as possible are aware of them.
Our platform, hosted by ASSOCONNECT©, gives you access to a wide range of articles and documents to help you find out more:
You will find some of them below (Links):
- The national regulation
- The minimal catch size and catch period
- The tuna Fishing regulation
Meeting members, exchanging ideas, discovering new techniques, but above all talking about our passion
A Federation has a duty to "Federate"! As a social link between individuals who share the same passions and interests. We pay a great deal of attention to the values of exchange and sharing that are inherent in our passion, and to this end we regularly organise events to give you the opportunity to meet other enthusiasts.
With over 160 nationalities living in the Principality, you're guaranteed a change of scenery with over 20 different nationalities among our members. We'll be delighted to talk, share and learn new things based on your own experience.
Measure yourself against the best fisherman and contribute to scientific research
Finally, you can put your knowledge and experience to good use by pitting yourself against other anglers or crews. You can also join our participatory science programmes and make the most of your time on the water by helping to count the Megafauna of the Pelagos Sanctuary, identifying non-native species, or helping to place a tag on a bluefin tuna. Adventure guaranteed!
If you wish and have the opportunity, you can also support these programmes financially through donations, in particular by financing the MINI-PAT beacons we are deploying, which cost €4,000 each.
What is Participatory Science ?
Participatory science, also known as participatory research, is an approach in which members of the public, often non-scientists, take an active part in scientific research. This collaboration between professional scientists and members of the public makes it possible to collect data, conduct experiments and contribute to solving scientific or environmental problems.
Participants in participatory science play an active role by collecting information, sharing their observations, taking part in experiments, or even helping to design research projects. This approach aims to involve a wide range of people in the scientific process, encouraging a greater diversity of perspectives and skills.
Participatory science can be used in a variety of fields such as ecology, biology, astronomy, public health, cartography and so on. Not only does it broaden the available database, it also raises public awareness of science and encourages understanding of and commitment to scientific and environmental issues.
The FMPS has been part of the Collectif Vigie Mer (a French national network of SP stakeholders) since 2021 and is contributing at its level to changing the knowledge and image of recreational and sport fishermen.
Membership card and licence
What is a membership card and what does it look like ?
A membership card is a document issued by an association to its members as proof of membership.
This personal card contains information about the association (contact details, benefits, etc.) and the member (surname, first name, address, photo, etc.).
Among other things, it facilitates the administrative management of the association and the rapid identification of its members.
Our association has opted for a policy aimed at reducing the amount of waste produced. That's why we've opted to make your membership/licence card paperless: a single document that's simple, less polluting and doesn't take up any space.
Once your membership is up and running, you can access it directly via your user account and download it so that you always have it with you.
What is the purpose of a sports licence?
The sports licence entitles the holder to take part in activities organised by the Monegasque Federation of Sport Fishing, to which the Association des Pêcheurs en Mer de Monaco is affiliated, in particular competitions.
The licence holder is covered by the federation's compulsory insurance for any damage he or she or another participant causes during these activities.
The licence also allows you to participate in the running of the federation. To find out more, please read the Statutes and Internal Regulations.
What does licence entitle you to?
- The "recreational" licence allows you to take part in the federation's activities, with the exception of competitions.
- The "competition" licence entitles the holder to take part in the federation's competitions.
- The "manager" and "referee" licences do not entitle the holder to take part in sporting activities.
